General Statement of Duties

Under the direct supervision of the State’s Attorney, is responsible for performing complex secretarial and office administrative duties of a legal nature.

Typical Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Serve as an office receptionist answering the telephone and greeting individuals.  Answer questions and schedule appointments for the State’s Attorney and the Deputy State’s Attorneys or direct individuals to the appropriate personnel.

  2. Take dictation and transcribe correspondence and legal documents.

  3. Accept insufficient fund checks from merchants and process paperwork.

  4. Prepare paperwork after a court appearance to include typing, copying and filing with the Clerk of Courts.  Send copies to the Sheriff’s office.

  5. Assist in the preparation of information for adult and juvenile court appearances such as initial complaint/indictment, preliminary hearings, trials and sentencing, type subpoenas, provide discovery to the defense attorney and assist in any research, as directed by the supervising attorney.

  6. Assist in printing up warrants, prepare reports, records, letters and petitions.

  7. Maintain professional and confidential case files on juvenile and criminal cases.

  8. Order all necessary inventory for the State’s Attorney Office.

  9. Maintain office while both State’s Attorney and Deputy Attorneys are not in.

  10. File and type active and inactive warrants.

  11. Assist crime victims of family violence, adult and child sexual assault, and other personal crimes, serving as a liaison between the victims and law enforcement.

  12. Advise victims about legal proceedings and of their rights and responsibilities, inform victims of counseling services in the community, and accompany victims to hearings and sentencing.

  13. Attend training sessions and meetings as required.

  14. Perform additional duties as required, performing all duties in a manner consistent with safe practices and policies.

Experience and Education:

  1. High School Diploma or G.E.D. Certification.  Vetch degree with legal background.

  2. No less than two (2) years’ experience with a legal background, or an equivalent of experience and education may be acceptable.

  3. Extensive knowledge of modern office practices, procedures and equipment to include typewriter, copy machine, fax machine, calculator, dictaphone, computer software, etc.

  4. Ability to demonstrate good communication skills.

  5. Ability to maintain a professional relationship with the general public and other employees.

  6. Ability to demonstrate good organizational skills.

  7. Ability to train other.

Physical Demands:

  1. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear, and use hands to finger, handle or feel.

  2. The employee occasionally is required to stand, walk and reach with hands and arms.  The employee is frequently required to sit.

  3. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.

  4. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment:  

  1. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet.

Examination, Testing, and Certification:

  1. Valid South Dakota Drivers License.

  2. Successful competition in written and/or oral interviews.

  3. Other such examination as deemed appropriate and necessary by the County and/or the State’s Attorney.

General Statement of Duties

Under the general supervision of the Sheriff, Chief Deputy, and Night Supervisor, is responsible for performing general law enforcement functions related to law and order and to serve the legal process of the courts.

Typical Duties and Responsibilities

1. Patrol assigned areas to enforce laws, issue citations, make arrests, investigate violations, and prevent criminal activity.

2. Serve civil and criminal warrants, subpoenas, summons, and other processes.

3. Transport prisoners to courtrooms, prison, medical facility and other locations as needed.

4. Investigate illegal and/or suspicious activities and persons.  Arrest violators, sign complaints, prevent disturbances.

5. Locate and place persons under arrest.  Transport persons on arrest warrants into custody.

6. Investigate domestic violence and other disturbances.

7. Assist with traffic control as deemed necessary.

8. Assist with weather observation, fire and ambulance calls and any other communication activities.

9. Testify in court.

10. Maintain courtroom security.

11. Carry out orders and enforce directions from State and Federal Court System.

12. Maintain records and complete required reports as deemed necessary.

13. Assist in vehicle maintenance.

14. Assist any calls assigned by dispatch.

15. Attend training sessions and meetings as required.

16. Wear Personal Protective Equipment as deemed necessary.

17. Perform duties in a manner consistent with safe practices.

18. Perform other such duties and functions as deemed necessary.

Minimum Qualifications

Experience and Education:

1. High School Diploma or G.E.D. Certification.  One (1) year experience with State and Federal mandates or an equivalent of experience and education may be acceptable.

2. Ability to obtain Certification by the South Dakota Law Enforcement Officers Training Academy with in 12 months of hire date.

3. Must be 21 years of age or older.

Southern Meade County Corridor Study

Due to increased development generating additional demands on the county road system, MEADE Moving Forward 2040 Transportation Plan identifies a need for an additional east/west connection between Erickson Ranch Road and 143rd Avenue. The Southern Meade County Corridor study will aid in identifying a conceptual alignment to enable Meade County to plan for the potential development in the area and secure the corridor's right-of-way.
